Fine, embroidery-like motifs cover this Soumak kilim. Red forms the foundation of a varied palette, while the small scale of the pattern creates a composed overall effect. Its detailed surface rewards a closer look. The pattern threads run across the reverse, so this kilim is intended to be used on one side. Soumak is a weaving technique that creates an embroidery-like surface as the fabric is woven, rather than adding embroidery afterward. An additional weft is wrapped around the foundation threads to form the pattern. This time-intensive construction produces a firm, durable textile and allows finer detail than a simple flatweave.
