Fine, embroidery-like patterns cover this soumak kilim. Many colors are worked over red, with the small scale of the motifs keeping the overall effect balanced. Pattern yarns travel across the reverse, so this is intended for use on one side. The handwoven width varies from 128 cm at the upper edge to 124 cm at the lower edge. Offered at a special price because of a palm-sized area of color bleeding, shown in the photographs, that is less apparent from a distance.
Soumak is a weaving technique that creates an embroidery-like surface as the fabric is woven, rather than adding embroidery afterward. An additional weft is wrapped around the foundation threads to form the pattern. This time-intensive construction produces a firm, durable textile and allows finer detail than a simple flatweave.
