A vintage Persian rug from the 1940s, woven in the Sirjan area of Kerman Province in southeastern Iran.
Its defining feature is the Shekargah hunting design, filled with animals, birds and flowering plants.
A central tree anchors the composition, with facing horses, birds spreading their wings, lions and other plants and animals arranged on either side. The design has the presence of a story unfolding across the rug.
Shekargah — The Persian Hunting Design
Shekargah refers to a design associated with hunting or hunting grounds, a longstanding theme in Persian art.
Such designs often combine royal hunting scenes, horses, birds, lions and plants to express the vitality and abundance of nature.
Here, boldly stylized plants and animals create a folk-art composition rather than a realistic scene. It combines the rustic warmth and strength associated with Sirjan weaving.
Soft Colors Shaped by More Than Eight Decades
The aged ground ranges from muted salmon red to rose brown.
Deep navy, brown, moss green and mustard create a mellow palette with the depth of an older rug.
A large pair of lions near the bottom, dark horses around the center and birds above are particularly striking. Plants emerging from vases and small flowers fill the surrounding areas, inviting new discoveries each time you look.
The settled pile and softened colors are part of this rug's vintage character. Dating from the 1940s, it has developed a calm, mellow appearance over many decades.
Handwoven Rugs from Sirjan
Sirjan is a rug-weaving region in Kerman Province in southeastern Iran.
Rugs from the region often combine geometric patterns with freely interpreted plants and animals, conveying the individual weaver's character and rustic sensibility.
The two sides of this piece are not mechanically identical: small differences and variations appear in the details. They are part of the interest of an older rug made entirely by hand.
A Vintage Rug as the Focal Point
Approximately 193 × 148 cm, a useful size for a living room or in front of a sofa.
Despite its bold motifs, the softened colors keep the design balanced. It complements wood, leather and antique furniture, and also stands out beautifully in a simple contemporary interior.
This 1940s Sirjan Shekargah carries the history and character of a vintage rug.
Its boldly drawn animals and plants, aged palette and warmth of handweaving make it a distinctive, collectible Persian rug.
