1. Vacuuming Your Gabbeh

Vacuuming Tips

Avoid vigorous back-and-forth scrubbing, which can damage the pile.
Vacuum gently in the direction of the pile.

Regular gentle vacuuming is the basis of everyday care. Work in the direction in which the pile feels smooth when stroked, or carefully across it, moving slowly enough to pick up debris. Occasionally lift the rug and vacuum the floor and the reverse. Removing grit from underneath helps protect the rug over time.

Which Vacuum Head Should I Use?

A head without a rotating brush is preferable, as aggressive brushing can pull fibres from the pile. If your vacuum has a rotating brush, use a suitable non-rotating floor head or switch the brush off where possible. Lower the suction if the rug is being pulled or disturbed. You do not necessarily need a new vacuum: choose the gentlest suitable setting and follow both the rug's and the appliance's care instructions.

Can I Use an Adhesive Lint Roller?

Do not use adhesive lint rollers: they can pull fibres from the wool pile.

2. Everyday Care and Common Questions

Can I Air My Gabbeh Outdoors?

Occasional airing can help remove moisture. Choose a dry, well-ventilated location and keep direct sun exposure brief, as prolonged or repeated sunlight can fade dyes. Air both sides and ensure the rug is fully dry before putting it back. Shaded ventilation is a gentler option for colour-sensitive rugs.

What About Dust Mites?

Regular vacuuming and moisture control are the starting points. If dust mites are a persistent concern, ask a qualified cleaning specialist about treatment appropriate to the rug. We do not recommend relying on household ironing to eliminate mites: uneven heating may be ineffective and excessive heat can damage fibres or dyes. Avoid steam unless a specialist has confirmed it is suitable.

Managing Moisture

Gabbeh comes from a relatively dry climate and should not remain damp. During humid weather, lift sections to allow airflow underneath and use a dehumidifier if needed. A natural wool smell can become more noticeable with humidity and often diminishes as the rug dries.

Can I Use Gabbeh with Underfloor Heating or a Heated Mat?

Many of our Gabbeh rugs can be used with underfloor heating or heated mats. Confirm compatibility for the individual rug and follow the heating manufacturer's temperature and covering instructions.

If You Spill Coffee, Tea or Another Drink

Act promptly: blot up the spill with a clean towel or absorbent paper without rubbing. If colour remains, ask for care advice suitable for your rug before applying water or cleaning products. Test any recommended treatment in an inconspicuous area first.

If a Stain Remains

If a stain remains, consult a specialist rug cleaner. Professional washing or targeted stain treatment may improve it, but complete removal cannot be guaranteed. Excessive treatment can damage wool or dyes, so discuss the likely result and cost first.

Pet Vomit or Urine

Pet vomit and urine can discolour fibres and dyes. Remove the material and blot promptly, avoiding rubbing or excess water, then contact a specialist for advice on suitable spot treatment.

Living with Pets

Dogs and cats often enjoy the feel of wool. However, scratching, digging or chewing can cut threads and damage the rug. Provide suitable scratching posts, toys or other alternatives and keep an eye on these behaviours.

Loose Fibres and Shedding

Some loose-fibre shedding is a normal feature of wool Gabbeh. Gentle regular vacuuming and time often reduce it, but the amount and duration vary with yarn, weave and use. Some owners report a noticeable reduction after around a year and a half; this is not a fixed timetable. Finer-woven rugs may shed less. Our own Hoshinamai Gabbeh collection was developed with attention to reducing loose fibres and has received positive customer feedback.

Removing Decorative Corner Tassels

Decorative pom-pom tassels at the four corners are attached after weaving. They can be removed by carefully cutting only their attachment thread, rather like removing a sewn-on button. Do not confuse these with structural warp fringes. See this video on YouTube for guidance.

3. Washing and Professional Cleaning

Home Washing: Check Suitability, Water Extraction and Drying First

Many wool Gabbeh rugs can be professionally washed repeatedly, but suitability depends on the dyes, fibres, construction and condition. The main challenges at home are safe water extraction and thorough drying. Before washing even a small rug, confirm that both the rug and your equipment are suitable. Large rugs are best entrusted to a specialist rather than washed without appropriate equipment.

Equipment precautions: A wet Gabbeh can be extremely heavy. A domestic washing machine may become overloaded or unbalanced, particularly when the rug cannot be distributed evenly. Do not assume that either a top-loading or front-loading machine is suitable: follow the manufacturer's load and item restrictions and seek specialist advice.

Drying precautions: Without effective water extraction, a saturated Gabbeh may remain wet for days in humid weather. Prolonged dampness can lead to dye migration, distortion, odours or a stiff finish. Do not begin washing unless safe extraction and prompt, thorough drying can be assured.

Specialist Rug Cleaning

Washing a large hand-knotted rug at home can be demanding and carries risks without suitable equipment. Consider a cleaner specialising in handwoven rugs. Oriental Moon also provides specialist cleaning and maintenance.

How Often Does a Gabbeh Need Washing?

There is no single cleaning interval for every rug. Use, soiling, odour and the feel of the pile are more useful guides than a fixed schedule. Some customers consider professional cleaning after several years, while spills or heavy use may require earlier attention.
