It has been about a week since the Gabbeh arrived, and I like it very much. I almost ordered as soon as I saw the online photograph, but as it was a substantial purchase, I arranged to see it during a business trip to Tokyo. It was just as beautiful in person, and touching it helped me understand the feel and thickness. Once delivered, I placed it in the living room. The rustic yet detailed motifs and rich reds and browns work with our dark mocha sofa, transforming the atmosphere. I particularly like the slightly wavering lines and varying widths around the border, which express its handmade character. It looks lovely in daylight and different again under incandescent lamps at night. I had planned a central table, but chose a small side table instead so we could enjoy the pattern. I now look forward to choosing furniture to complement the rug.

A richly patterned rug like this rewards both viewing the whole composition from a distance and studying the small motifs close up. A clear glass or acrylic table is another option for keeping the design visible.
