This antique Hereke carpet from Turkey is handwoven entirely in silk and reflects the refined decorative tradition for which Hereke weaving is renowned. The rich blue-green field is covered with an intricate all-over arrangement of flowers, scrolling vines and delicate botanical motifs. Rather than relying on a dominant central medallion, the design is evenly distributed across the entire field, allowing the carpet to retain its visual balance from every direction and even when furniture is placed upon it. A vivid red main border frames the composition with finely drawn floral and arabesque motifs. The contrast between the blue-green field and the red border is softened by accents of ivory, warm gold, pale blue and muted green, creating a palette that is both decorative and dignified. On closer inspection, each flower and leaf is carefully articulated, demonstrating the precision of the weave. The natural sheen of silk adds depth to the surface, causing the colours to shift subtly according to the direction of the light and the viewing angle. At times the field appears luminous and vibrant; from another angle, it takes on a deeper and more subdued character.
